At Parkland School Division, student safety is more than a priority—it’s a commitment. As one of the largest student transportation systems in Alberta, we safely transport over 7,800 riders every day, covering more than 19,000 kilometres daily. To put that in perspective, over the course of a school year, our buses travel the equivalent of going to the moon and back four and a half times.

This October, during School Bus Safety Week (October 20-24, 2025), Transportation Services invites everyone—students, families and motorists—to join us in keeping safety front and centre. Every safe decision on the road protects lives.

School Bus Safety Tips

Plan Ahead—Don’t rush

  • Build time into your commute. Rushed driving leads to unsafe driving—especially critical during Alberta’s winter months.

Watch for Strobe Lights

  • All PSD-contracted buses are equipped with roof-mounted strobes, activated whenever the bus is in service. These high-visibility lights make it easier for you to spot school buses, whether moving or stopped.

Stop! It’s About Safety

  • Always stop for school buses and at crossings. Staying alert helps protect the ones we love.

Don’t Pass When Red Lights are Flashing

  • When a bus’s red lights are flashing, the law requires a full stop in all directions. All PSD buses are equipped with exterior cameras. Law enforcement may use this footage to issue fines of $567 and apply six demerit points to your licence, which can also affect insurance premiums.

Put the Phone Away

  • Distracted driving is dangerous driving. Calls and texts can wait—lives cannot.

Appreciate Your Driver

  • Our professional school bus drivers carry immense responsibility, transporting the most precious cargo: children. Show your gratitude by driving safely and taking a moment to express your thanks.

Together, we can ensure that every student arrives at school and home safely.
