Upcoming Retirement for Superintendent Boyce

11

September 11, 2025 - Parkland School Division (PSD) Superintendent Shauna Boyce has announced her upcoming retirement, marking the conclusion of a remarkable career in education that has spanned more than 35 years.

Shauna began her journey as a teacher in PSD, later serving as Department Head of Mathematics at Spruce Grove Composite High School. She then completed a secondment with Alberta Education before returning to PSD as Assistant Principal and eventually Principal of Memorial Composite High School, where she guided the school community through the construction and opening of the new Memorial campus in 2010.

Her executive leadership path began in March 2016 when she was hired as Associate Superintendent in PSD. She was appointed Deputy Superintendent in May 2017, and became Superintendent in 2018. In these roles, Shauna helped lead milestone projects for the Division, including the opening of Copperhaven School in Spruce Grove, the modernization of Woodhaven Middle School, and the replacement of Westview School in Stony Plain and most recently positioning the community for the construction of a replacement Spruce Grove Composite High School. Shauna has led the Division through a pandemic, school closure conversations, attendance area reviews and labour negotiations with patience, grace and wisdom.

Lorraine Stewart, Board Chair of Parkland School Division, shared:

“The Board has benefitted so much from Shauna’s common sense and from her ability to look at things very clearly. She is a skilled communicator who crafts key messages tailored to the audience, with just the right amount of detail, always delivered expertly. Shauna is student-centred and student-focused. She leads with her head, she leads with her heart, she leads with kindness, she leads with empathy but mostly she leads with strength and character. PSD will always be grateful for the leadership that she has provided throughout the years and we wish her all the best in whatever her future brings.”

Known for her strong sense of humour, approachable style and community-minded spirit, Shauna embodies the Division’s values of connection and care. A country-girl at heart, she has never shied away from rolling up her sleeves to support students, staff and families. She is equally proud of fostering leadership in those around her and contributing to ongoing conversations about the future of education in Alberta.

Reflecting on her career, Shauna shared, “It has been the greatest privilege of my life to serve the students, staff and families of Parkland School Division. I am incredibly grateful for the relationships I have built, the leaders I have learned from and to have been a part of a transformational time in the field of education. PSD will always hold a special place in my heart.”

While Shauna has confirmed her plans to retire, this change in leadership is not imminent. She will continue to serve students, staff, and the greater PSD community until the end of this calendar year. This commitment ensures stability and continuity as the Division transitions to a new Board of Trustees following October’s election and navigates the uncertainty that comes with the looming potential job action from the Alberta Teachers’ Association.

The new Board of Trustees will set the direction when it comes to the process to determine who the next Superintendent will be for Parkland School Division. Those details will be shared with the PSD community when they become available.
