*** For 2022-2023, the distance criteria was 2.4km to be considered eligible students for transportation funding, attending their designated school. A new distance criteria was introduced by Alberta Government in March 2023. Beginning in 2024-2025, Kindergarten to Grade 6 students residing 1km or further from their school will be eligible for funding; and Grades 7-12 students residing 2km or further will be eligible for funding. The newly created distance parameters do not take effect until September 1, 2024. However, the Alberta Government announced that they will be providing funding to school divisions beginning in 2023-24 for those riders who do access busing in 2023-24. (subject to seating availability)
Alternate Seat Fees
Provincial transportation funding exists beyond 2.4 km from the primary residence to the nearest school along the shortest route. School boards are NOT mandated by legislation to register students with multiple or alternate pick-up and drop-off locations.
With vacancy on buses and resources available, it has been recent practice by Parkland School Division’s Transportation Services to allow alternate locations for either pick-up or drop-off in situations where children have parents with joint custody, day home/daycare, or before- or after-school scenarios. Since the 2017-2018 school year, Alternate Seat Fees are charged for families who request and are approved for alternate seats on a different bus route.
New requests have to be located on existing routes with available spots on the bus in order to be considered.
When a parent or guardian reserves multiple locations for pick-up or drop-off, this occupies a seat on multiple buses even when its not being used. For example, if a child stays with mom one week, dad on alternate weeks and a daycare each afternoon, and all locations happen to be on different bus routes, that individual child is taking up three spots on three different buses at all times.
Transportation Services registered capacity is currently approaching full.
Efforts are made to provide service to as many locations as practicable; however, all requests have to be located on existing routes with available spots on the bus in order to be considered. Unfortunately, not all requests are able to be accommodated.
