Teacher Collective Bargaining Update

June 10, 2025 - Parkland School Division would like to provide the following update for stakeholders regarding the ongoing provincial collective bargaining process between the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) and the Alberta Government via the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA).
The ATA announced the results of a province-wide strike vote conducted June 5-8. Of the teachers who participated, 95% (36,862 teachers) voted in favour of authorizing strike action. This does not mean that a strike is imminent, but it does give the ATA the legal authority to initiate strike action at any point within the next 120 days, provided 72 hours' notice is given.
Unlike the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) where negotiations were conducted at a local level with school boards guided by provincial mandates, and therefore only impacting some school divisions throughout the province, it is important to emphasize that this is the result of province-wide bargaining between the ATA and the Government of Alberta. The two sides do have two bargaining days scheduled in June.
We recognize that news of a possible strike may raise questions and concerns. While there is still uncertainty around what the coming weeks and months may hold, we want to emphasize that:
Teachers remain on the job and committed to student learning at this time.
Similar to the strike earlier this year with the CUPE, any future labour action will be preceded by a minimum of 72 hours’ notice.
PSD deeply values the strong working relationship we share with ATA Local 10. We are grateful for the ongoing professionalism, dedication, and care our teachers demonstrate each and every day in service to students.
Should any labour action take place, Parkland School Division will follow guidance from the Government of Alberta and communicate any operational impacts directly to families. We will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.
If you have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your school or the Division Office. Thank you for your continued support and partnership.
