June 1, 2023 - Prior to each new school year, it is vital that Parkland School Division determines the balance between fees collected for transportation and transportation funding supplied by the government based on new ridership levels. A thorough analysis concluded that there was a need to adjust the current fee structure for our regional transportation system for the 2023-2024 school year.

At the Regular Board Meeting on May 30, 2023, Trustees approved a revised Transportation Fee Schedule. Fee increases are required to operate the regional transportation system on a break-even basis. Fee increases are being proposed to offset Transportation’s anticipated increases in contractor rates due to inflation and the recently announced changes in the student eligibility distances (1 kilometre for K-6 students and 2 km for 7-12 students). Ridership is expected to increase as a result of the eligibility changes, so PSD is adding 10 new routes to the system.

The largest increase is for eligible (for funding) riders, at $130 or 86%, as the majority of riders now become eligible for Government of Alberta funding and as such PSD cannot charge the previous fee amounts. All other transportation fees remain the same (alternate seat, ineligible) or decrease due to riders becoming eligible for some funding under the new changes.
