PSD Statement on Gender Identity Proposed Legislation

Alberta Education, Government

Monday February 5, 2024 - In response to the Government of Alberta’s recent announcement pertaining to human sexuality and gender identity proposed legislation, Parkland School Division wishes to provide our community the following reassurance:

All members of the PSD community are expected to demonstrate, and ensure, that a sense of belonging, for all staff, students and community members, exists in all places.

PSD has a responsibility to ensure that each student enrolled in a school operated by the Board and each staff member employed by the Board is provided with a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment that respects diversity and fosters a sense of belonging. This relates to all 12,500 students including our 2SLGBTQIA+ learners and staff. This commitment is present in both Board Policy and Administrative Procedures.

In keeping with a commitment to the Alberta Human Rights Act and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, in Parkland School Division everyone is accepted and experiences a sense of belonging. The Division supports the endeavors of staff, students, parents and the community to promote positive student behavior and conduct throughout our community of schools.

We have been informed that the Government of Alberta will be engaging with a number of stakeholders regarding related policy changes. PSD intends to participate in these engagements to the greatest extent possible.
