Buses Cancelled Friday, December 23rd

Inclement Weather, Transportation

December 22, 2022 - Bus service for Parkland School Division's regional transportation system will be suspended for a fourth day in a row on Friday, December 23, 2022. Wake-up temperatures around the time some buses prepare for their early morning rural routes will experience wind chill temperatures in the -41 range. Although temperatures are forecast to rise throughout the day to around -32 with the wind chill, many bus contractors are also dealing with additional mechanical issues that are inherent when the fleet stays idle for such a long time in a deep freeze.

However, Friday’s cancellation does not include the bus in Fort Chipewyan serving students at Athabasca Delta Community School.

The final decision to send a child to school rests with parents and guardians.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to follow their school's regular system for reporting an absence should they choose to keep their children at home. This is an important step to ensure that schools have an accurate record of who is in their care for the day.

Parents and guardians should ensure that students are dressed appropriately while traveling to and from school during inclement weather conditions. The temperatures can drop dramatically in the event of mechanical issues.

For more on the topic of Severe Weather, please familiarize yourself with Administrative Procedure 750: Severe Weather.

We apologize for any inconvenience. At Parkland School Division, we are a caring and compassionate organization, guided by what’s in the best interest of our students, and their safety is our top priority.

For those who decide to keep their children home, we wish everyone the best of the Holiday Season and hope you have a restful Winter Break.
