AP 267: Patriotic Exercises
Instruction & Assessment
Background
Teachers and staff within the Division play a role in nurturing each student’s pride in being a Canadian citizen. Patriotic exercises shall exist in all Division schools.
Procedures
1. The Principal shall ensure that a consistent weekly schedule exists for the playing of the National Anthem “O Canada”.
2. The Principal shall ensure that an appropriate Treaty 6 and/or Treaty 8 Land acknowledgment is stated or broadcast in coordination with the National Anthem.
With respect to Remembrance Day
3. Remembrance Day shall be acknowledged and honoured, notably:
3.1. Remembrance Day ceremonies shall occur on the school day immediately preceding November 11th and in accordance with the Alberta Remembrance Day Act.
3.2. If a ceremony is held at the school, all students are expected to attend the ceremony as per section 1(2) of the Remembrance Day Act.
3.3. The staff member or members responsible for planning and organizing the Remembrance Day ceremony shall review Administrative Procedure 155 – Event and Visit Protocol prior to the event to ensure adherence to proper protocol.
With respect to parent choice
4. Parents may have their child(ren) opt out of patriotic exercises for cultural and/or religious beliefs as per section 58.1 of the Education Act.
