AP 200: Teaching Principles

Instruction & Assessment

Background

In 1997, Alberta became the first province to introduce a Teaching Quality Standard (TQS). The revised Teaching Quality Standard is aligned with the Leadership Quality Standard and the Superintendent Leadership Quality Standard. On September 1, 2019, the TQS came into effect and applies to all certificated teachers in Alberta.

The Superintendent ensures that teachers within the Division attend to quality teaching. Quality teaching occurs when the teacher’s ongoing analysis of the context, and the teacher’s decisions about which pedagogical knowledge and abilities to apply, result in optimum learning for all students.

Procedures

1. All Parkland School Division teachers shall meet the Teaching Quality Standard at all times, and throughout their career.

1.1. In any given context, reasoned professional judgment shall be used to determine whether the Teaching Quality Standard is being met.
