AP 351: Maintaining and Enforcing Codes of Conduct

Background

In keeping with Parkland School Division’s vision, mission, values and beliefs, the Superintendent is committed to providing safe and caring school environments and workplaces.

The Code of Conduct for Parkland School Division applies to all members of our school community, specifically including our staff, students, parents, community volunteers, and visitors. Schools and workplaces may, additionally, prescribe codes of conduct to clarify behaviours that are deemed to be desired, or are unacceptable, for a particular location or activity.

Procedures:

1. School Principals shall ensure that Administrative Procedure 350: The Code of Conduct is easily accessible by all members of the school community, with the following criteria:

1.1. The Code of Conduct shall publicly available online; and

1.2. The Code of Conduct shall be prominently displayed within the school.

2. It is the responsibility of each Parkland School Division student, staff member and stakeholders to understand that, in addition to The Code of Conduct, specific codes of conduct may exist for each location, activity or situation;

2.1. By default, the Code of Conduct shall extend to any school activity or situation, including transport by Parkland School Division Transportation at any time for any reason, and for any event – including extracurricular events – sponsored by Parkland School Division.

3. The School Principal shall ensure that all aspects of the Code of Conduct, as well as any supplementary, school-specific expectations within the Code of Conduct, are well understood by all students, staff and parents.

4. Any additional school school-specific expectations for student behaviour and conduct shall be:

4.1. Developed by the Principal, with opportunity for input from staff, students, parents and the community;

4.2. Communicated to staff, students, parents, and the community annually by the Principal; and

4.3. Reviewed annually and revised as required by the Principal.

5. The Principal's expectations shall include the potential consequences for failure to meet the student code of conduct.

Failure to Comply

6. Administrative Procedure 360: Student Discipline shall apply, as necessary, under the direction of the principal when student discipline is required due to a breach of conduct.

7. When staff discipline is required due to a breach of conduct, it shall be addressed in accordance with applicable employment agreements, board policies, and administrative procedures, under the direction of the principal, appropriate supervisor, or Human Resources department.
