Why Regular Attendance Matters

At Parkland School Division, we believe that every school day counts. Attending school regularly is one of the most critical factors in your child’s academic success and personal growth. We strive to maintain attendance expectations and provide valuable information to support your child in developing lifelong habits of punctuality, resilience and engagement. Attending school regularly:

  • Builds strong academic foundations. Research shows that students who attend school consistently are more likely to perform well academically;
  • Supports mental health and well-being. Daily routines promote stability and reduce anxiety;
  • Develops essential social and emotional skills. Attendance fosters peer connections and collaboration; and,
  • Prepares students for future success. Regular attendance builds habits critical for the workplace.

Chronic Absenteeism Defined

Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10 per cent or more of the school year for any reason, including excused and unexcused absences. This means about 18 days in a standard 180-day school year. In Alberta, key points about chronic absenteeism include:

  • Percentage-based:
    It's measured as a percentage of missed instructional time, not just the number of days.
  • Includes all absences:
    Whether excused or unexcused, all absences contribute to the calculation.
  • Sign of underlying challenges:
    Chronic absenteeism can be an indicator of other challenges a student might be facing.
  • Importance of early intervention:
    Recognizing students at risk of chronic absenteeism is crucial for early intervention.
  • Link to student success:
    Regular attendance is seen as a foundation for academic success and future opportunities.
